“The word can't is dead to me...”
— Vaughan Sullivan
In Search Of Symmetry, a long time coming
"The word can’t is dead to me...” – says Vaughan Sullivan, main songwriter and vocalist for Melbourne band In Search of Symmetry (ISOS).
“My grade 4 music teacher told me I couldn't play guitar. Haha, don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something”, this is not just a throw away comment from Vaughan, his never-say-die approach to life shining through in the lyrical content and vibe of the music.
In Search Of Symmetry was formed in 2015 by Vaughan and Josh Nicholson (guitar/vocals) – long term friends from school days with a shared passion for bringing the positive edge to a genre of music often associated with introspection, melancholy and anger. Vaughan explains, “I wanted to bring the energy of metal, the attitude of punk and fuse it with my positive outlook on life, plus throw in some party vibes. We’re just trying to make some fun, positive shit for kids to jump around to and get inspired by!”
2017 sees a fully-formed lineup ready to tour. “I’ve had most of these songs written for the past 3-4 years and now the band is put together, we plan to hit the road across the country.”
Vaughan and Josh recorded the Polariods (2015) and Unbreakable (2016) EPs with friends of the band Sonny Truelove and Evan Lee at STL Studios, two hours north of Sydney. Both EPs show just how rapidly these newcomers are coming to terms with who they are and what they are striving to achieve. Coupled with STL’s exceptionally polished production and with Sonny sitting in the producer seat, the results are something not normally associated with the early works of a band. “Sonny and Evan just knew exactly what sound we were going for and everything just came together really naturally” praises Vaughan.
On why a full line-up has only formed now, Vaughan explains, “Josh and I were working away from home, living on opposite sides of the country for the majority of the writing process, even flying from Perth and Melbourne respectively to Sydney to record with Sonny and Ev. We were just focused on getting the music out however we could. Now that we’d gotten Polaroids and Unbreakable released, we could switch focus to forming a band that would work well with us.”
Just like the music itself, newcomers Ryan (Drums), Adam (Bass) and Barak (Guitar) all have very different musical backgrounds and influences. But it’s the energy and positive outlook that binds it all together. On the additional members, Vaughan is entertained, “Ryan’s mostly played in metal bands, Adam’s heavily punk-influenced with some weirder ambient tastes, and Barak is into prog rock and complex song structures. We’re all over the place musically, haha, but man it works!”In Search of Symmetry’s debuted to a sizeable crowd supporting Young Lions at Bang on the 25th of March along with Maefire (Melbourne) and the Deadlights (Brisbane).
"I know I already said that the band grew up between Polaroids and Unbreakable, but god damn. Unbreakable is just full of songs that make you want to take on the world. The band’s sound is solid, the lyrics are phenomenal. This is for sure going to be added to my phone so I can jam out in the car with the windows down this summer."
